DEFINING NEW LIBERALISM: The New Liberal Candidate

The LA New Liberals are thrilled to present the final installment in our Freedom, Agency, and Abundance: Defining New Liberalism series. In this final installment, we are exploring what it means to be a New Liberal candidate for elected office. What are some of the common values New Liberal and pragmatic progressive candidates share? How do they present their message to constituents and partners? What sorts of coalitions have they endeavored to build in their respective races and beyond? Come discuss with us on August 28th!.

PEER TO PEER ORGANIZING WITH GRETA CARNES

In the the fifth meeting of the Freedom, Agency, and Abundance: Defining New Liberalism series, the LA New Liberals will discuss both ethics and charter reform. It's no secret that the LA City Council is scandal-ridden: bribery, kickbacks, racism, abuse of aldermanic privilege, and federal indictments are just a cursory description of the feast of malfeasance to which Angelenos have been treated in the last decade. Moreover, the size of the City Council has not changed from 15 members in almost 100 years while the City has grown to 4.5 million residents. What can be done to help the City reform not just to be more representative but ethical and responsible? Come discuss with us on June 26th!.

DEFINING NEW LIBERALISM: BUILDING A BETTER BUSINESS ENVIRONMENT IN LA

Los Angeles is a region of creativity, and not just for big and small screens. Pioneering enterprises in aerospace, retail, marketing, health, science, and energy have all called – and in many cases still do call – Greater LA home. However, a combination of high costs, taxes, permitting requirements, and regulations have caused many businesses to take their value creation to other regions and states. What steps do we need to take and barriers do we need to remove to regenerate an environment of entrepreneurship in our region? In the fourth installment of the Defining New Liberalism series, the LA New Liberals will be sitting down with several local business owners to discuss current barriers to entry for Angeleno entrepreneurs and how we can make LA a better environment for fostering the enterprises of tomorrow.

Holding Economic Development to Account: an LA New Liberals Webinar

Holding Economic Development to Account: an LA New Liberals Webinar

Local governments love economic development. Whether it’s a new factory, commercial center, or stadium, the prospect of new jobs, tax revenues, and spillover effects are often too much to pass up. At minimum they make for good press and talking points.

Or do they? Ample are the examples of economic development projects that turn into expensive boondoggles. Worse, local politicians and civil servants debase themselves by throwing millions – if not billions – in subsidies in exchange for the potential of a future corporate benefactor who ends up going elsewhere anyway.

On October 26th, the LA New Liberals are pleased to host John Mozena, President of the Center for Economic Accountability (CEA). Join us at 7 p.m. for a Zoom-based conversation about how economic development schemes and subsidies fail, and how municipalities can work to create better environments for better and stronger economic growth and shared prosperity.

Please register to attend via Zoom here.

LA New Liberals Present: The Dysfunctional Metropolis

The LA New Liberals are proud to host Emily Jacobson, author of "The Dysfunctional Metropolis: Reforming Los Angeles’s Land Use Planning and Entitlement." Emily will be presenting and discussing this report, which details the layers of subjective and often contradictory processes that stand in the way of multi-family housing production in Los Angeles. Her work specifically calls out discretionary review and the disincentives and moral hazards involved in this opaque, inconsistent, yet critical part of the City of Los Angeles's entitlement process.
